What is WBGT?
Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a measure of heat stress that takes into account temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation. Unlike standard temperature readings, WBGT provides a more accurate assessment of how the human body experiences heat in outdoor conditions.
The measurement combines three components: the wet-bulb temperature (which accounts for humidity and evaporative cooling), the globe temperature (which measures radiant heat from the sun and surroundings), and the dry-bulb temperature (standard air temperature).
Heat Safety Tips for Singapore
Stay Hydrated
Drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine which can dehydrate you.
Avoid Peak Hours
Limit outdoor activities between 10am and 4pm when the sun is strongest.
Wear Light Clothing
Choose loose-fitting, light-colored clothes. Wear a hat and use sunscreen when outdoors.
Know the Signs
Watch for heat exhaustion symptoms: heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, dizziness, or headache.
How to Interpret WBGT Readings
| WBGT Level | Risk Level | Recommended Actions |
|---|---|---|
| Below 29°C | Low | Normal outdoor activities can continue. Stay hydrated. |
| 29°C - 31°C | Moderate | Take regular breaks in the shade. Increase water intake. |
| 31°C - 33°C | High | Limit strenuous activities. Rest frequently in cool areas. |
| Above 33°C | Extreme | Avoid outdoor activities. Stay in air-conditioned spaces. |
