Northeast Monsoon
December – March
Winds blow from the northeast. Wettest time of year for Singapore and eastern Peninsular Malaysia. Typhoons in the Philippines can enhance regional rainfall.
Southwest Monsoon
June – September
Winds blow from the southwest. Drier for Singapore but brings the traditional haze season when fires burn in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Regional & world weather affecting Singapore
Singapore’s weather is shaped by large-scale regional systems. The two monsoon seasons (Northeast: December–March, Southwest: June–September) dominate the annual cycle, while tropical cyclones in the South China Sea, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modulate rainfall on weekly to multi-year timescales.
Why regional weather matters for Singapore
Even though Singapore is small, weather here is rarely an isolated event. A typhoon near the Philippines can pull moisture away from the region and bring a dry spell to Singapore. A cyclone in the Bay of Bengal can change the monsoon flow over the Andaman Sea. Haze from Sumatra is a regional phenomenon driven by winds. That’s why regional weather forecasting is essential to interpret local conditions.
Forecast range & reliability
Singapore forecasts are most reliable out to about 4 days, with skill extending to roughly two weeks for trend outlooks. Beyond that, only seasonal outlooks (e.g. El Niño/La Niña probabilities) carry useful signal. Always pair the 24-hour forecast and 2-hour nowcast with the live rain radar for the most accurate picture.
